Overview

Genioplasty is a chin surgery that repositions, lengthens, or decreases a chin that is either receding or too prominent. In some patients, a genioplasty may be performed in addition with a lower jaw osteotomy to enhance aesthetic results. Genioplasty alters a patient’s profile, thus affecting the harmony of facial symmetry and enhancing the overall facial appearance. Furthermore, a genioplasty can relieve strain on the facial muscles (the mentalis, in particular). Palo Alto plastic and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Steven Schendel, will usually perform a sliding genioplasty, where the bone is physically cut and slid either forward or back, depending on what is being addressed. In some cases, he may prefer to do chin augmentation with the use of an implant. This will be discussed in detail during the initial consultation.

Surgical Technique

Chin surgery can be very transforming for patients and is considered a versatile procedure. Patients who undergo a chin osteotomy, otherwise known as a sliding genioplasty, will basically undergo chin lengthening. During this procedure, an incision is placed inside the lower lip in front of the gum line and the bone is advanced or shortened and then secured into a new position with a small titanium plate. Because the incisions are made within the mouth, there is minimal to no scarring. If a chin implant is used during surgery, a silicone implant will be placed through an incision made under the chin. The implant is then placed directly over the bone along the lower jaw. A pocket might be constructed to hold it, which may involve shaving the jawbone to help fit the implant in place.

During/After Surgery

Genioplasty is performed as an outpatient surgery in our accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. The procedure takes between 1-3 hours. The recovery for genioplasty will take a bit longer than chin augmentation where an implant is used. The recovery should not deter a patient who wishes to have a more prominent chin. The ability to create changes to the chin in a vertical dimension using a genioplasty technique can be invaluable. Patients will have bruising and swelling in the jaw area, but over the course of 4-6 weeks the chin will take on a natural appearance.

Expected Cost

The average cost for a genioplasty procedure ranges between $2,000-$4,000. Insurance may be an option if a chin condition exists that is creating a medical issue.

Genioplasty FAQs

Augmentation or Genioplasty?

This is a tough one for some patients, as not everyone wants a foreign object such as an implant inside their chin. Unfortunately, the implant approach is a more common procedure to lengthen the chin and create a wider jaw. The reason for this is because not all surgeons are trained to perform osseous genioplasties (genioplasty) and overall, chin implants are technically easier to place by surgeons who do not have the expertise. While chin implants create beautiful results, the disadvantage is that it does limit some of the options for a patient. A maxillofacial plastic surgeon will be able to determine which approach is best, and will have the technical expertise to master both surgeries.

Can I Eat?

In the days following surgery, patients will need to stick to a soft chew diet and slowly progress towards eating regular foods. The chin and jaw will be quite sore for a couple of weeks and chewing will be difficult at first.

Complications?

As with any plastic surgery procedure, there maybe some complications after surgery, but in most cases, these are usually temporary. The most important complications to be aware of are potential numbness to the gums, front teeth, the lower lip and chin. Most patients find that the feeling  comes back within a few months.

Good Results?

Whenever the face is involved in a plastic surgery procedure, patients tend to have some fears and anxieties about what they will look like. This is why it is important to choose an experienced maxillofacial plastic surgeon to perform genioplasty surgery. Patients that do their research and find an experienced surgeon usually always love their results.
